Problem & Challenge-Based Career Guidance

Are We Asking The Right Questions.

Instead of asking ‘what’ is a particular discipline or profession, we ask ‘who’ is a part of the discipline or profession, what is their role, and we understand the problems & challenges they are working on in the world, the path that led them to where they are today. If want to be the change in the world that we want to see, we must immerse ourselves in the world, feel her problems and challenges, so that we can leverage our educations to gain a deeper understanding of the ways that we can leverage our knowledge to make an impact.

There is no path.

Most high schools, colleges, and universities reinforce the erroneous notion that there is a linear path that people take in their careers. Increasing pre-professional programs constrain the thinking of students to focus on a series of procedures, perspectives, and pathways toward the future. But one of the most interesting lessons from The Realm of Possibility is that very few people have a linear path. Most people who make an impact, who are working on their passion, who are love what they do did a great deal of exploration, and often failed along the way. These notions are not translated on C.V.s, resumes, or in news stories. The new world of work will require most of us to carve out our own careers, and The Realm of Possibility attempts to show how people across professions and disciplines achieve this.

Vision and Imagination are Tools to Create the Future.

Interesting jobs in the 21st century don’t just get tasks done. They require imagination, vision, and courage. After understanding the problem/challenge the person is working on, we ask them for their vision for the future, and solicit advice for students searching for their passion. We also ask them for media, videos, articles, books, etc. that made an impact on their trajectory so that students can understand some of the resources that shapes this individual’s world view.

Collaboration and Integration

The day of the lone researcher, the lone salesman, the lone worker is over. Collaboration is at the heart of solving problems, and is at the heart of most careers from academia, to engineering, health care, entrepreneurship and beyond. Our profiles at The Realm of Possibility use network diagrams
